What did you think of this? There seems to be so much on GR about it.

Lukewarm. I thought she did an excellent job of portraying milieu of beginning of the civil rights era. However, the characters did not engage me and the alternating chapters of narrative did not draw me in. I am not sorry that I read the book, but I left it wanting more than it delivered for me. The novel may spark more interest among readers who did not live through that era.
