“The biggest threat to the church today is fans who call themselves Christians but aren’t actually interested in following Christ.”

“So in case someone left it out or forgot to mention it when they explained what it meant to be a Christian, let me be clear: There is no forgiveness without repentance. There is no salvation without surrender. There is no life without death. There is no believing without committing.”

“Pray for the physical needs of those believers who have been dislocated and sent away from their homes, especially for families traveling with the young, the sick, and the elderly. Pray for the gospel to continue to spread even as believers are scattered because of persecution. Pray for Christians living in hostile areas to have wisdom as they decide whether to leave for a safer place, or to stay and preach the gospel where they are.”

“I give up, God. You made me. You know how I am. I cannot keep my distance. Nor can I keep those I love alive. Only you can do that. Only you are God. I give over. I fall prostrate before you. What you see fit to bless me with I will rejoice over. When you takest away, I will turn to you for solace. For you are the one and only God.”

“cannot make yourself righteous by simply changing your behavior,’’ Mother replied. Essie stiffened. ‘‘I’m sure I don’t know what you mean.’’ ‘‘What I mean is that when Christ died on that cross, He took your sin upon himself. The very one you committed with Mr. Currington. As well as all the ones you have committed in the past and will commit in the future.’’ Cracking another pecan, Essie stuffed down the lump rising in her throat. ‘‘Have you so little appreciation for His sacrifice that you would fling it back in His face by trying to earn your way to heaven?’’ Mother rose.”

“Pulling the covering from her basket decorated with pink-and-white polka-dotted ribbon, she withdrew her journal, a pencil, and some cheese. Jesus Christ She formed the letters of His name with careful script. Points of Merit: • Will never leave me • Nothing can separate me from His love • Took my sins upon himself • Forgave me • Turns my darkness into light • Cares about everything I do, even knows how many hairs are on my head. Drawbacks: She took a bite of cheese, then tapped the top of her pencil against her lips. • Can’t see Him, touch Him, or hear Him with my physical body Yes, but blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. • Is always right about everything True. But if you depend on me and trust me, I will take care of you. • Expects absolute obedience I have warned man that it is better to live in a desert than with a quarrelsome and ill-tempered woman. It’s in Proverbs, in case you’ve forgotten. She took another bite of cheese and suppressed a smile. • Has a droll sense of humor A feeling of shared warmth and amusement washed over her. She giggled. Wrapping her arms around herself, she basked in the warmth of His love. It was more fulfilling than she had ever thought possible. She knew, of course, that she would still go through difficult times. But she also knew she would not be alone. Smiling, she closed the journal and bowed her head before partaking of her meal. She thanked the Lord for her daily bread, for blessing the bicycle club and, most of all, for being her One and Only.”

“Sunlight poured through the jailhouse window. A breeze that carried a hint of lilac on it rustled the papers on Tony’s table. Rubbing his forehead, he tried to concentrate on his work, but his grandmother’s ring—Essie’s ring—kept distracting him. He’d found it in the corner of his cell and had set it on his desk. Picking it up for the hundredth time, he discovered he enjoyed touching it simply because she’d touched it, too. Melvin’s words kept ringing in his head, but he had a hard time accepting them. Because if what Melvin said was true, then Tony had nothing and God had everything. And there were some things Tony wanted. He wanted to be proven innocent and freed from jail. He wanted his inheritance. He wanted his father to be proud of him. He wanted his wife to be pure. No, he wanted Essie to be pure. But he would never have his father’s approval and he would never be Essie’s first. He might never win his freedom and, thus, never be able to enjoy his inheritance. So he was back where he started. With him having nothing and God having everything. Don’t you have enough already, Lord? Do you have to have what belongs to me, too? But deep down he knew no matter what he did or didn’t do, he had no control over any of it. But God did. And the only viable solution was to give it up to Him. And why not? How much worse could it get? He swallowed, immediately realizing it could get a whole lot worse. He could lose Essie for good. Lose his life for good. But even if he didn’t get her back, or if he hanged for the murder of his brother, he would at least have the comfort of knowing he’d left the decision-making up to God and not to himself. Blowing out a breath, he silently relinquished his control and laid it at Christ’s feet. And in doing so, realized he might not ever have made his earthly father proud, but perhaps he had his heavenly Father.”

“She glanced up but didn’t smile, realizing she’d been doing exactly that. Pining for what she couldn’t have was making her miserable. “You needs to give yo’ burden to the Lord, missy. You don’t have to carry it yo’self.” “I’m trying, honestly. But it’s so hard at times.” “I know it is, but don’t you think it was hard on God when He let His Son die for the sins of this world? Ain’t nuthin’ that’s worth anything that don’t cost us something.” She’d recently read in the New Testament about how Jesus had willingly died on the cross to set man free from the bondage of sin. She thought of Millie’s sweet baby and how hard it would be for her to sacrifice her child. Carina shook her head. It would be unbearable to watch your child suffer. How much more must it have been for God, who could have merely uttered a word or even a whisper and made all of His Son’s suffering on the cross stop. How small and petty her worries seemed in the light of Christ’s sacrifice. “Thank you, Abel. You sure are wise.”

“Lord,” I cried out, in my mind. “You don’t see things the way we mortals see them. We judge by outward things, but You look at the heart. So much of my life, I have chased after outward concerns. I have wanted to excel. But You, O Lord, know my heart. Please forgive me for serving the false masters of my soul. Help me to please only You.” I thought for a moment and then emended my prayers. “Help me to want to please only You.”

“Any sacrifice we make in our quest for freedom will be wholly consumed and blessed by God. Notice something extremely important: Gideon prepared a sacrifice. Then we read in verse 21: “With the tip of the staff that was in his hand, the angel of the LORD touched the meat and the unleavened bread. Fire flared”

“Isaiah 6 Isaiah’s Cleansing and Call It was in the year King Uzziah died* that I saw the Lord. He was sitting on a lofty throne, and the train of his robe filled the Temple. 2 Attending him were mighty seraphim, each having six wings. With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. 3 They were calling out to each other, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Heaven’s Armies!       The whole earth is filled with his glory!” 4 Their voices shook the Temple to its foundations, and the entire building was filled with smoke.”

“Warning against Pride 15 Listen and pay attention!       Do not be arrogant, for the LORD has spoken. 16 Give glory to the LORD your God       before it is too late. Acknowledge him before he brings darkness upon you,       causing you to stumble and fall on the darkening mountains. For then, when you look for light,       you will find only terrible darkness and gloom. 17 And if you still refuse to listen,       I will weep alone because of your pride. My eyes will overflow with tears,       because the LORD’s flock will be led away into exile.”

“Galatians 5 Freedom in Christ So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law. 2 Listen! I, Paul, tell you this: If you are counting on circumcision to make you right with God, then Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3 I’ll say it again. If you are trying to find favor with God by being circumcised, you must obey every regulation in the whole law of Moses. 4 For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God’s grace. 5 But we who live by the Spirit eagerly wait to receive by faith the righteousness God has promised to us. 6 For when we place our faith in Christ Jesus, there is no benefit in being circumcised or being uncircumcised. What is important is faith expressing itself in love. 7 You were running the race so well. Who has held you back from following the truth? 8 It certainly isn’t God, for he is the one who called you to freedom. 9 This false teaching is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough! 10 I am trusting the Lord to keep you from believing false teachings. God will judge that person, whoever he is, who has been confusing you.”

I deeply desire for you to say when you turn the last page, “And I thought I knew Him and loved Him when I first began.” If you don’t have a close and familiar relationship with God, don’t despair!”

“life what your mind has never conceived. But just as the children of Israel were held captive by the Babylonians, areas of captivity can keep us from living out the reality of Isaiah 64:4 and 1 Corinthians 2:9. Take a moment to reread the definition of captivity I gave you previously: A Christian is held captive by anything that hinders the abundant and effective Spirit-filled life God planned for him or her. One of the most effective ways we can detect an area of captivity is to measure whether or not we are enjoying the benefits God intends”

“places and wide valleys to a heavenly destination. Until then, abiding in Christ (John 15:4, kjv) is the key to staying deliberately connected with our upland Source. Take pleasure in knowing that God inspired His Word with great care and immaculate precision. He chose every word purposely. When He said we could have peace like a river in Isaiah 48:18, He wasn’t drawing a loose analogy. He meant it. What does it take to have this peace? Attention to God's commands (by obedience) through the power of the Holy Spirit.”

“Romans 1 Greetings from Paul This letter is from Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, chosen by God to be an apostle and sent out to preach his Good News. 2 God promised this Good News long ago through his prophets in the holy Scriptures. 3 The Good News is about his Son. In his earthly life he was born into King David’s family line, 4 and he was shown to be* the Son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit.* He is Jesus Christ our Lord. 5 Through Christ, God has given us the privilege* and authority as apostles to tell Gentiles everywhere what God has done for them, so that they will believe and obey him, bringing glory to his name.”
