“Authors of theological texts face difficult problems in determining which pronouns to use when referring to God. God does not have a gender, nor should any language used about God indicate that God is gendered. However, there is no gender-neutral, third-person-singular personal pronoun in general use in English. Many solutions (such as using plural pronouns or alternating between masculine and feminine pronouns) seem incongruous with theological doctrines such as monotheism and God’s eternity. Because, for reasons unknown to us but known to God, Christian revelation has generally used masculine pronouns when referring to God, and because the great majority of Christian tradition has followed this use, I have chosen to use masculine pronouns when referring to God. In doing so, I do not find feminine language theologically inappropriate to use for God (both the Bible and Christian tradition do so in a number of places), nor do I intend to ascribe either masculinity or femininity to God (who transcends them both).”
