The inheritors learned through experiencing the consequences of their own behavior and as a result were given the opportunity to discover their own inventiveness and resilience. Parents took the long view, steeling themselves against short-term inconveniences and worries. As we will see, even though in each of these cases the immediate consequences were oftentimes painful and uncertain, the children absorbed the underlying message about the value of effort. They grew up determined, resilient, and grateful.”
