Changing hairstyles, getting tattoos, drinking alcohol, smoking and taking drugs are all ways of trying to change the state they are in. Increased anger, crying or unreasonable reactions can all be ways of trying to exert some power, to prove to themselves that they still have agency over themselves and their life. Repetitive behaviours are another form of control. Maybe your child has started a new routine? Whether it’s having to do certain things before they leave the house, like making their bed or wearing a certain top, or seemingly positive behaviours, such as extra studying or a strict fitness regimen, this could be an example of trying to take control and gain some certainty.”
