But the dramatic book of Job declares that the patriarch’s sufferings were not a token of God’s judgment upon him for wickedness; they were rather an evidence of God’s confidence in him for his integrity. Elihu was a different kind of comforter, as we gather from his magnificent description of the purpose of God’s chastening. (See Job 33:14–30.) The world could do with more comforters of his kind!”
