Goodreads asked Nigel Shakespear:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Nigel Shakespear After 10 years of working in Romania I wanted to write about this fascinating and interesting country where I was often being asked 'What do you think about our country?' and where I found great contradictions: people stuck in a mindset from the communist era, people with enthusiasm and full of life, administrations following their own interest at the expense of others, those committed to the betterment of the society. And then I came across the oral history works of Studs Terkel and Tony Parker and knew I could use this style. So I found outsiders, people who had chosen to live in Romania, those who were more integrated with Romanian people, and I asked them to help me with coming to an answer to that question, 'what do you think of our country?'
