I am pretty thorough about world-building. I have hundreds of pages of notes that are the backbone of my series. When I write, I start with theme. Then I add plot. Next I tailor my world to support the plot. A lot of research goes into my world-building. I've actually gone so far as to learn French in order to read source material that wasn't available in English.
