Pam Kirst asked Jacqueline Winspear:

It seems that World War I and its era and effects are getting a lot more attention in literature now. Why do you think that's the case?

Jacqueline Winspear I would say it is due to the 100 year anniversary of that year in 2014. Each of the years 2014-2019 will have its own anniversaries - the Spring Offensive in 1915, the sinking of the Lusitania. The Battle of the Somme in 1916. Passchendaele in 1917, and the Armistice in 1918, right up to the Paris conference of 1919, the outcome of which many believed ushered in the Second World War. WW1 marked the beginning of our modern history, and many of our present day conflicts have roots in the "war to end all wars."
