This is an interesting question. Most intense romances seem to end in early death! Take Romeo and Juliet and all the later versions of the story. Even Gatsby winds up dead in his own swimming pool. There's Lizzie and Darcy, I suppose, though the story wisely ends with their marriage. Same with Harry and Sally. Ulysses and Penelope have a long marriage, but Ulysses is away for most of it.
Maybe the answer is that it's hard to write an engrossing novel about a happily married couple. The stormy relationships make better copy.
