I am currently reading "The North Sea" and am enjoying it thoroughly. The parallels between the type of story you tell and the writing of Cormac McCarthy are abundant, particularly "Blood Meridian." Was "Behold the man" your way of tipping your proverbial cap to "See the child"?

Yes, that's right. Well-spotted. I was also thinking a little bit of the opening of Moby Dick, 'Call me Ishmael', but the McCarthy allusion is the main one. Thanks for the question.

I loved The North Water! I picked it up ultimately because I've recently moved to Hull from the US, it caught my interest due to location, and it turned out to be a new favourite. When you decided to write this novel, was it driven more by the setting (East Yorkshire), or by the subject matter? Is arctic exploration/whaling of particular interest to you?
