Who is your favorite fictional couple, and why?

Glen R. Stott My answer may be a bit unconventional. There are many classical couples that have impressed me, but one couple stands out for me. Maggie and Tom Tulliver in “Mill in the Floss” by George Elliot. They are sister and brother, so this is not a typical couple. Maggie is the protagonist in a story that begins when she is 9 years old. Maggie is always wild and unconventional while Tom is reserved and often embarrassed by Maggie’s behavior. As Maggie matures, she is involved in two romantic relationships; one with Phillip Wakem, who is a cripple and later with Stephen Guest. The family goes through many trying times over the years. Through it all Maggie has a deep desire to be accepted by her brother, but nearly everything she does turns into a wedge between them. When Maggie discovers that Tom is trapped in the Mill that is threatened by the flooding Floss river, she obtains a boat and rows out to save him. Finally, they are reconciled. Then the boat capsizes and they drown in an embrace. It is not the story of a romantic love, but I found this couple very memorable.
