Of all times? Zhivago and Lara. Why? Well, because it's Zhivago and Lara, c'mon. Okay, because Zhivago is a house-husband with the heart of a poet. Lara is the "leaf in the wind." They have their moment, then all is swept away by the typhoon that is early 20th century Russia. To get the rest, ya gotta read the book (two or three times).
However, of recent, I'd say Nick and Amy Dunne (Gone Girl), because they are so wonderfully dysfunctional, yet so perfectly suited to each other. Read it for the character development, that's the important element of this story, not the "twist" or even the clever denouement.
