Hello! I see that you have a Goodreads interview coming up, and thought I'd ask a question. I really enjoyed " Snowflower and the Secret Fan," and am looking forward to reading your new book. The first was set in China, and the second features Chinese characters. Would you consider writing a historical novel set in a different culture?

I'm doing a lot of apologizing today as I try to answer these Goodreads questions. I'm sorry it's taken me so long to write back!
I've now written ten books. All of them have had to do with China or the Chinese American experience. The novel I'm now writing takes place on an island off of South Korea. It's a very different culture in some ways, but its also the most Confucian of all the Asian countries. In that way, it's very familiar.

Have you ever felt difficult finding your own identity in mixed environment (american vs. chinese)? I am half indian, half finnish and facing this kind of puzzle. I enjoy your books, especially Shangai Girls where chinese sisters moved to America and settled down there and less or more found their place there. And for last question, have you ever studied history in university or you study everything on your own?

Lisa, I would like to thank you for such a wonderful story. As an adoptee who reunited with birth parents, I really appreciate how well you provided insight into each characters challenges and overall angst with an almost indescribably emotional and entrenching event. While all your books are wonderful, this one is truly special to me. I don't have a question, just a Thank You. :) ?
