Did you ever read the A Song of Ice and Fire series? It seems to be right up your alley in regards to your Inheritance series.

I read part of the first book and that’s all. If you’re looking for something similar, I thoroughly enjoyed Tad William’s series Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, which was one of George R. R. Martin's original inspirations.
