Goodreads asked Jae Holt:

How do you get inspired to write?

Jae Holt It depends on what I am writing. When I wrote "Circles," my initial inspiration came from a book I read years ago. My characters were inspired by a question, who gets to decide whether the choices you make are right or wrong?

But my current middle grade novel is entirely inspired by my son. He sees reading as a chore, so being able to engage him in the novel writing process inspires me to find ways to make the characters and setting interesting to a child who does not find reading fun.

I also write every day, not necessarily to publish, but to write down thoughts that I may or may not use in the future. Here, inspiration comes in many forms: the smell of a coffee shop, the sound of a humming bird's wings outside my window, a random tweet or facebook post - anything that causes my mind to think, "I need to write that down!"
