Michael Grant As a rule I do not use real people. I sort of used my kids for Jack and Brianna, but only sort of.

Now, do I occasionally drop in a wink-wink reference? Sure. Remember the guy who fell into the FAYZ in LIGHT and Gaia ate his arm? I had someone in mind. But the references are usually positive. For example in FRONT LINES the two training camps are Camp Maron and Camp Szekely. Maron for Mark Maron, a comedian I like, and Szekely the birth name of Louis C.K., another favorite comic.

One thing I really love about your series is how there are no cardboard-cut-out characters. Everyone matters, you care whenever someone dies and they all seem like people that you might have known a couple years ago... As a writer myself, how do you make the reader care and empathize with all of your characters, not just the most important ones?

Is Messenger of Fear a duology? I was hoping that there would be a third book. I love that series so much. It kept me on the edge. If not, would there be a spin off of that series?
