Ian McGuire I'm working on it now. I'm going as fast as I can (which is unfortunately not very fast because I'm a slow writer!). It'll be 2018 if everything goes smoothly.

Hi Ian, I am 3/4s through The North Water and loving it. It starts off feeling quite focused on the whaling industry although the plot expands beyond that. One of my favourite novels is Moby Dick and I guess it's hard to write a book about whaling at all without thinking about that. Are you a fan of Moby Dick and did it influence you at all in writing The North Water? I see a bit of Starbuck in Sumner.

I loved The North Water! I picked it up ultimately because I've recently moved to Hull from the US, it caught my interest due to location, and it turned out to be a new favourite. When you decided to write this novel, was it driven more by the setting (East Yorkshire), or by the subject matter? Is arctic exploration/whaling of particular interest to you?
