Can this be read as a standalone? I noticed it was #13 in the series and I've never read any of them yet and was wondering if I would be lost if I gave this one a go?

There are also a lot of reoccurring characters, each with their own backstory with Maisie (13 books' worth of backstory, to be exact!). You might miss a lot of the subtext that makes these books so freaking great.(less)
