The best advice I ever heard came from Hemingway: 'The art of writing is attaching the seat of your pants to the seat of your chair'. That aside, I would encourage writers to be absolutely truthful and authentic to themselves and to immediately kill every second-hand thought, idea, image that presents itself for use.
