Ginny Geddo asked:

Why is this book in SciFi sections? What about it makes it SciFi, other than there are 'sciences' in it? I also get it is (technically) FANTASY, even though nothing in it is 'magical' or even 'fantastical'. I like the story (and will probably $ the sequels) but this is NOT SciFi/Fantasy. Thinking FICTION next to Stephen King would be a better venue.

Seth Dickinson It fits well under both science fiction and fantasy - genres are tags, not exclusive categories a book needs to be sorted into. As a contrafactual exploration of the interplay between society, economy, and geography it's SF - and as a secondary world (creating parallax with our own) it fits right in the heart of fantasy.

Genre labels are for marketing departments.
