In addition to Alexander's excellent take on Kelly's motivation I think the Marines actions were also motivated by Mars desire to obtain and control information about the proto-molecule, the key to which was held by Holden and his crew. Without getting into spoilers it's a little unclear just how much Mars knew at this point, but I think they at least knew enough to know that this information could cause a major shift in the balance of power in the solar system for whomever controlled the information.

Also, Holden and his crew was probably seen as "people Mars really wanted to question", which wasn't fully done when the attack happened. Hence the rescue act.

I think that was mainly Kelly's decision. Upon meeting Holden they had this automatic mutual respect for each other. I'm not done with the book yet but Mars seems to be a very military orientated place. Kelly was a Marine and by the way they describe these Marines they are bad asses and also hold a sense of honor.
That's how I understood it at least. Prisoner or not you are charged with the well being of anybody in need, and acts like these are what stand them out maybe above any other military or para military unit.
