Bridget Gaynor asked Peter Swanson:

Hi Peter I have a question about Mystery books I'm writing a crime book thats set in Melbourne Australia and I've got this idea of a backstory of two characters in the book I'm writing. Are backstories involving 2 characters good for a mystery book or would the readers get confused? Kind regards Bridget Gaynor

Peter Swanson That depends on the reader, of course. I personally love back stories in novels--I think it's really interesting, especially if the back stories are revealed bit by bit and not in one big chunk.

My recommendation is to write the back stories for your characters even if you end up cutting them at the end of the book. It's always good to write them out because it helps with character development. Hope this was helpful! Peter
