I don't like to read too much into character deaths because a lot of times I don't think authors think too much into it. But with Cole I spent a lot if time thinking about it. I think Cole as a character was very representative of IAAN as well as the "war" between the "normal" adults and the psi kids. Cole was at war with himself between trying to be a league adult unaffected by IAAN and coming to terms with his abilities and trying not to be afraid of those abilities. I think that this really showcases the overlying war. You have two sides to the war; the "normal" adults and the psi children. Towards the very end of the book, Cole comes to terms with his abilities as seen through telling Liam and his plan to tell the rest of the kids. We see the war with himself slowly ending. I think his death was poetic of the "war" between kids and adults ending. So as much as I hate that Cole died I feel like it was necessary. (less)
