Carol
The Captain is generous with his money towards Caroline since he pays for her to attend a special school because she is a gifted singer. Sara Louise loved The Captain first and essentially longed for his attention. He was generous with his time with Louise. She would visit him regularly with her friend Call. Caroline was bored one day and tagged along and The Captain began to give Caroline more attention. There was much resentment towards Caroline from Louise because she had more privileges and was favored by everyone over Louise. Her mother favored Caroline because she was the weaker twin at birth and gave her many more advantages than her sister Sara Louise. But if they were similar it is their genuine kindness toward others. Both girls feared The Lord because of their upbringing. Louise was more of a Tomboy where Caroline was much more girly. Louise would do anything to get attention- like work men’s jobs- without avail since her father preferred Call to be his worker over Louise. Then even her best friend Call preferred Caroline as he returns from the war and chooses Caroline over Louise.
All of this creates the comparison to Jacob and Esau in The Bible as Jacob was preferred by his mother Rebecca and Esau lost his inheritance because Jacob and Rebecca tricked him from getting their father Isaac’s blessing. Ultimately it is inferred that Louise overcomes it all - just as Esau does. Forgiveness is everything :) and our choices make our destiny.
