Definitely not middle grade, as it deals with some very heavy topics in detail. I think it's more suitable for older teens.

The writing should be understandable for middle schoolers, but the topics are very heavy. I wouldn't say middle schoolers can't read them, I know I read a lot of heavy things even in 6th grade. Just be careful, and make sure you know what you're getting into. It's definitely a great novel for teenagers and up though!

It just depends on the maturity of the kid. I'm 13 and I liked it, but it definitely dealt with some YA issues that I wouldn't recommend for 6th graders, and some 7th graders.
