Goodreads asked June Shaw:

How do you get inspired to write?

June Shaw My ninth grade teacher told me he was sending me to a literary really in English I. I would take a written test, and most of it would be grammar. We would also need to write a paragraph in case of a tie. He told me to practice by writing a paragraph about a splinter.
I wrote a description of a piece of wood and brought it to him. "No. This is boring," he said.
"I know, but you told me to write it."
And then he wrote "Ouch!" He told me to take it from the splinter's point of view. Someone just sat on it.
Right then I knew one day I would do that--create things and people and make them say or do anything.
I placed first at the rally.
