(view spoiler)[Janet - White Oleander was my favorite book for years.. I carried it around like a bible. When I first read Paint it Black I was disappointed - .yet every reading reveals more. Paint it Black is my new bible - as Josie characterized Michael's attachment to Meredith - it's like some kind of heroin I can't put down.
Awaiting your third novel.
Until then - what do I read? (hide spoiler)]

Wow, appreciate that you stuck with it until it spoke to you. The answer to this would depend on what you liked about it. I always feel great in recommending Blonde by Joyce Carol Oates, The Last Bongo Sunset by Les Plesko, Slow Dance on the Fault Line by Donald Rawley, Failing Paris by Samantha Dunn, The Memory Room and This is Why I Came by Mary Rakow, Lithium for Medea and Tall Tales from the Mekong Delta by Kate Braverman, Play it as it Lays by Joan Didion, The Lover by Marguerite Duras, The Hours by Michael Cunningham, Short story collections by Joyce Carol Oates--Upon the Sweeping Flood, By the North Gate, The Goddess and other Lovers. Dog Soldiers and Bear and his Daughters by Robert Stone. Already Dead by Dennis Johnson. The Alexandria Quartet by Lawrence Durrell. That should be a start! And my new novel should be coming out in October. thanks for the question!

Huge fan of White Oleander, have read it at least 5 times. I really like Starr, what a character. I know nothing compares to White Oleander but are there any novels that are similar in story line or genre that you could recommend? Or any good romantic stories that aren't cliche?

I'm reading and loving "White Oleander". However, another story that I particularly enjoyed was "The Method", a short story I found in the compilation, "Los Angeles Noir". Have you written other short stories? What are your favorites and do you have favorites by any other authors?
