Goodreads asked Anna Lynn Miller:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Anna Lynn Miller On a radio program, I heard about these buildings in China. A particular company--typically a large, industrial one--owns a skyscraper. The bottom few floors is where their workers preform the necessary labors. A cafeteria and perhaps some entertainment occupies a floor above that. The top floors is where the workers reside.

It's a win-win situation, right? The company provides what the workers need, the workers don't have to worry about shopping for food or paying rent. No one is ever late for work and the weather can't create issues for them either. Perfect. Except they had to install net at the top of the buildings because people were jumping from the roof. It seems, since the people didn't ever have to leave the building, they were becoming depressed. They felt trapped.

I got to thinking about that, wondering what it would take for a group of individuals to be willing to subject themselves to this situation. What if the government provided this 'opportunity'? What would they have to do to keep these people from leaving?

Ta-da! A book. Well, at least the beginnings of one.
