Goodreads asked Matt Cowper:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Matt Cowper I worked at a grocery store for roughly four years in high school, and that experience translated smoothly into a novel.

I also wanted to create a small-town character who wasn't "stuck." Many depictions of small-town life, whether in books, movies, or TV, have characters who supposedly aren't living up to their full potential because they happen to live in a rural area and/or work at a menial job - as if cities are the only places where people can really blossom, or professional jobs the only ones worth doing. I wanted to twist around this idea, and show that someone can be content living a "simple" life.
