No, it's a stand alone book. I haven't read any of the other books, and I wasn't confused about anything or any of the characters.

I agree with what others have said. Interestingly, the references to earlier stories/crimes I haven't read has made me go back and read those!

It helps, but no. By reading previous Lincoln Rhyme novels, it gives you great insight and descriptions about several key characters in The Steel Kiss. However, Deaver always re-introduces them with facts about them, what they do and their previous run-ins with past criminals. All in all, if you read this book before any other Rhyme novel, you really won't miss anything.

I've never read anything else in the series, and I'm about 100 pages in, and it doesn't feel like I've missed out on anything. It feels like some other series I've read, where the author introduces anything pertinent you need to know as it goes along.
