Susan Meissner Omigosh,Karen. I am so sorry I didn't see this question until now. My apologies. Thanks for reading and loving Secrets of a Charmed Life. My feeling is each sister made a choice the day they left Charlotte's safety. And then of course their mother made a choice and Hitler made a choice and the neighbor, so really, it was a mesh of choices that resulted in those sisters being separated. Emmy felt most responsible, but it truly wasn't her aspirations that took her sister from her, it was everything. And in the midst of war, we still get to decide things. I wanted this to be a good discussion question for book clubs!! Glad it was for us, too. :)
