so the dialogue " the inheritance was modest the victors more savage than meek....." it means that how when people are born from that time onwards they are innocent shy and meek but later on we see that the bomb eruptions wrecked havoc on the town of skipley causing catastrophe and devestation everywhere. Peoples' loved ones were taken away their house were burnt down. Mothers lost their sons, children lost their parent what a cold and harsh reality did the people had to face and this made them more savage than ever. They became bloodthirst for revenge they wanted revenge for the families, They were so lifeless now that the couldn't tolerate to see someone else happy. People fought viciously and ferociously there was bloodshed and terror everywhere. People fought for their rights people spoke up for their rights and people fought for their land(bitter earth). More people were dying there was bloodshed and an orgy of killing and terror everywhere. From a child to an old man everyone took a stand for what was rightfully theirs. All of the innocence, modest and positveness people had was crushed they became savage and aggrieved in such traumatizing times. All whats left of their loved ones were memories now ashes and there was so much of bloodshed everywhere that it became like dust i hope this helps you
