Goodreads asked Kimberly Shursen:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Kimberly Shursen Lottery just came out last week. For years. people have asked each other what they would do if they won the lottery. This question, coupled with seeing co-workers who split the proceeds if they all went in on a lottery ticket, led me to start thinking about two men who made a pact that they would split the winnings if they had the winning ticket. The idea went even further when Caleb O'Toole was created. What if a man who appeared normal to society had a dark side to him? What if the friend who held the winning lottery ticket reneged on the agreement? And what if the darker side of Caleb O'Toole became even darker with this broken promise; especially if Caleb was in debt with a big-time bookie who was threatening him and he felt that the 746 million dollar mega-lottery ticket would help him win the woman he wanted to possess. All these ideas came into play when writing Lottery.
