Dawn asked Deborah Harkness:

I haven't read the third book yet (but it's next on my pile!), so I don't know if you've answered this question in it. At the end of the second book, Diana and Michael come back to the present where time has kept passing while they were in the past. If Diana can time travel, why couldn't she just travel back to the instant they left for the past?

Deborah Harkness It's not always that easy to get to a very precise moment in time. Diana and Matthew were lucky going back to 1590--maybe beginner's luck! But as we know, moving into the future is more difficult and requires complicated magic. Lots can go wrong!
