What inspired you to end Midnight Star with Adelina sacrificing herself for her sister?

I always knew that ending a series starring an anti-heroine would be tricky; how does a villain get a happily-ever-after? I knew it would be impossible, and that it had to be bittersweet. The only way I felt Adelina could redeem herself from her past dark actions was to offer something to the world out of love and selflessness, to choose good instead of darkness. Since her sister matters more to her than anyone else in the world, I knew this had to be her choice.
