Goodreads asked Brian Michael Stegner:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Brian Michael Stegner If you want to actually have people read your stuff and you're using Amazon's KDP, just to get your foot in the door you need to have an amazing cover, good title, and catchy 10% sample.

If you lack any of those three things it probably won't matter if the book is amazing, no one will get past judging it on those first three variables.

Also it helps to be like 60% artist / 40% marketer. If you can't do that (generate a good cover) on your own you'll need to hire that part out.

Otherwise your only readers will be your mom and your cat.
