Goodreads asked Dave O'Connor:

What are you currently working on?

Dave O'Connor I have just finished Attainment, Book 7 of Warner's World series. This brings that series to a close. It's funny having spent the last five years on the series to come to the end and realise 'what now?'

I have a number of ideas to pursue including a couple of spinoffs, based on characters from the original series. The first of these is Bernie's Crusade, which is based on the character of Bernie Wong. He's the senior political advisor to the Federation Defence minister. This book is a prequel, set six years prior to the start of the rogan war that is the subject of the Warner's World series. Here is the pitch.

It’s 2506, six years before The Awakening and Bernie Wong, Senior Political Advisor, to the Federation Defence Minister, is in a bind. The new Government he serves has a mandate to reign in the military. The Joint Chiefs are not inclined to give up their freedom to act, especially out in the Far Reaches. But events there are about to take a turn for the worse. Lieutenant Commander Chelsea Baxter is about to enforce an order that will have dramatic consequences. The Baxter Incident is about to set Bernie on his crusade to ensure the supremacy of civilian authority. It is also going to unleash a string of events that will see vested interests collide. What price are you prepared to pay for securing the moral high ground?

Another spinoff focusses on the character of Nick Hope, who commands a commando platoon in the series. He's a handy guy to have on your side in a tight situation. But with the end of the war he is demobbed. His wife has left him and he is looking for a new future. He ends up on the colony ship New Hope destined for the Oralis system ceded to the Federation by way of rogan reparations after the war.

But not everyone wants to see the new colony prosper. The big mining companies are furious at being locked out of lucrative ventures. Reactionary political interests are conspiring to kill off the bid by the new progressive candidate for the Chief Minister's post. They want to stymie his political reform program and they are prepared to do almost anything to ensure his "new vision" of galactic colonisation is not implemented. Add to the mix another alien race that claims sovereignty over Oralis and you have a powder keg situation. When mankind's future hangs in the balance it's good to know you have Hope on your side.
