5th grade is probably the beginning age for really understanding this book and the underlying issues it explores if the 5th grader is a strong reader or will be discussing the book with others. Otherwise middle school kids and even high school would get a lot from The Giver as well as it's three follow up stories. The reading isn't difficult, but grasping all it explores takes the ability to analyze and reflect. And adults will enjoy it too, which was the age I, my husand, and daughter all read and loved it.

I guess depending on how old the 5th grader is. I'd say the best youngest age at which to read this is probably 13. Maybe 12, but I would recommend 13.
