I normally read series in order, but from some of the reviews, this book sounds like it's a bit of an oddity. Do you need to read this, in order to follow the rest of the series?

Joshua Booher I have only read the first two books. So, this is a partial answer. There is a small (to date) story arc through the first two books. In addition, the characters' relationships build through the first two books. So, it is my opinion that you would want to read the books in order.
Bob Seabury I read the last one before I realized it was a series, then I went back to the first. I think you'll enjoy it more if you read them in order, because the relationships between the characters build as each book proceeds.
