Nicole D'Settēmi
Nicole D'Settēmi asked Janet Fitch:

Janet, my favorite novel is White Oleander. There are so many influences I see in it from other stories and books/writers/etc, am I correct with the following (just to name a few)...?: 1-Invisible Monsters 2-The Diaries of Anais Nin (Multiple Volumes & portraits, especially June Miller-to-Ingrid 3-Anne Sexton's story-to-Ingrid, as well 4-Audrey Hepburn/Jean Sebert-helped paint Claire's portrait

Janet Fitch Hi Nicole--I haven't read Invisible Monsters, but certainly Nin was a huge influence on me, maybe not any character in particular, but on me in my development as a writer. On the other hand, Anne Sexton was on my mind the whole time I was writing it. I actually have recordings of her reading her own poetry and would play them. Ingrid loved Sexton. And Audrey Hepburn was absolutely my image of Claire... Pretty dead on!
