It's historical fiction. The story of Shashenka is fiction, but the setting of the book, and characters in the book are historic. There are real characters in the novel. I read this as an e-book, and there is a reference in the back listing all of the characters, and it marks the real, historic characters, among them, Rasputin, Stalin, Prince Andronnikov, Boris Sturmer, Lenin, to name just a few. The revolution, rise of the communists, the Terror, etc., all of these events are real. The author spent years researching Russian history, and archives. The fictional characters are based on real life stories told to him during his research and what he found in the archives.
