We can't answer for every writer - we're sure everyone has their different reasons. In Paper Princess Ella doesn't really know Reed in depth, she's met and fallen for him, but they haven't known each other that long. She also knows there's a lot of secrets and drama in the Royal household and feels that she's been lied to. She doesn't really know the Royals, and she's not sure she can trust them.
