I did notice the "Es'chers" staircase! My MSc (taught) starts of with Analytical number theory this year, and I am hoping to carry on with that and do a paper on Fractals next year. My real love is Symmetry - mathematically and visually. I have done some stats and probability and about 20 years ago did an MSc in Econometrics and forecasting. Have you read "Anathem" Neal Stephenson? Scifi fantasy with maths!

Yes, I did :-) It was a great book. I cannot recall any similar book now (except for Crichton's books), but I can recommend you "Uncle Petros and Goldbach's conjecture", it's a charming book.
