Keith Lawrence Thanks for your question Tammi. After being the first African American graduate of the California Maritime Academy, in the deck department, I got my first third mate's job about four months after graduation on a SEDCO oil rig anchored in Alaska, but I didn't get my actual second mate's (navigator) job until 1983; seven years after graduation.
