Susan Z. Miller The laws in the United States that enforced racial segregation from the late 1800s through the 1950s were known as Jim Crow laws. These laws were a way of life for Blacks, particularly in the South, which includes North Carolina where this story takes place.
Yin Chien I would interpret it as symbolic:
1. Crow is black, this is a story of African Americans in North Carolina a few decades post-Civil War.
2. Black is symbolic of the dark history of the Wilmington Insurrection of 1898 featured in this book.
Sameen Borker Thank you both for your responses. :)
