If you've ever seen Fried Green Tomatoes, the plot, setting, and characters are almost exactly the same. I believe there's a book as well. Go Set a Watchman (the sequel to TKAM) is supposedly very different from TKAM, but you could also try that.

If you enjoyed this book, I definitely recommend the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor. It also takes place in the segregated south, and I can't recommend it enough. It is such a fabulous book and it is definitely one of my all time favorite books. Check it out! :)

If you want to read more books that are similar in style and theme to this novel, I'd suggest reading more Southern authors like Eudora Welty (Delta Wedding), Flannery O'Connor (the short stories), William Faulkner (As I Lay Dying, which heavily influenced Carlos Fuentes' The Death of Artemio Cruz, another book well worth reading), Carson McCullers (The Heart is a Lonely Hunter), and the playwrights Tennessee Williams (A Streetcar Named Desire) and Lillian Hellman (The Little Foxes, Another Part of the Forest). And these are just the white Southern writers. There are also a slew of great black American writers like Zora Neale Hurston (Their Eyes Were Watching God), Richard Wright (Black Boy), W. E. B. Du Bois (The Souls of Black Folk), Charles W. Chesnutt (The Marrow of Tradition, The House Behind the Cedars, etc.), Margaret Walker (Jubilee), and so on. All these people reflected in their own way on the culture of the South as it pertained to black people.

Go to your nearest library, look for the classic section, or ask a librarian where it is. And, then look through the books. Find some you like.

Read Of Mice and Men. It made me cry, but overall it was awesome.
