Yes, you can. There are some nuances you'd miss out on but it is possible. For some even preferable because the first one has a heavier atmosphere and is not as light-hearted and sweet as this one.
Of course I loved all instalments and would recommend reading them in order, but that's just because I love this series so much ;)
