In the way I get all my story ideas: I saw some random thing that gave me a spark. In the case of All the Ugly and Wonderful Things, I saw a man riding a motorcycle down a dirt road beside a hay field. As I tried to imagine where he was going, I imagined a little girl in the hay field, too. She was hiding from someone, but not the man on the bike. Of course they would meet, and from there I had to figure out who they were and what their relationship was.

I loved this book. Stellar. How much fun did you have with Gentry's Middle English and what was the fun/discovery versus stress/pressure-for-perfection balance while you were writing from his POV? How did his way of speaking allow you more or less play with his character?
