Barbara asked this question about The Underground Railroad:
Does anyone like that the author wrote the railroad as a physical, operating one? I felt it unnecessary and beyond the scope of possibility.

I was disappointed by the creation of a physical railroad because I think it took some power away from what is a powerful novel. I enjoyed the book immensely because the characters and their stories were so compelling. The author is a talented storyteller who spent years researching slavery and all that it entailed within the historical context of the times. I found the characters and their circumstances believable. By the portrayal of a literal railroad, I think that for some readers the entire book is reduced to nothing more than a work of fiction and therefore, the emotional punch of the book is softened. I think the book would make a great movie and if it were, I would hope that the underground railroad would be shown the way it actually operated. It would be a great story and a vehicle for educating people as well. (less)
